समता पार्टी के संस्थापक और देश के पूर्व रक्षा मंत्री जॉर्ज फर्नांडिस का मंगलवार सुबह 7 बजे से 88 वर्ष की उम्र में निधन हो गया।  जॉर्ज फर्नांडिस पिछले कुछ दिनों से वह स्वाइन फ्लू से पीड़ित थे और दिल्ली के एक अस्पताल में भर्ती थे। लंबी समय से बीमार होने की वजह से ही वह सार्वजनिक जीवन से दूर थे / अपने लंबे राजनीतिक करियर में उन्होंने रक्षा, उद्योग मंत्रालय का जिम्मा संभाला था।  प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी, राष्ट्रपति रामनाथ कोविंद समेत कई बड़ी हस्तियों ने उनके निधन पर दुख व्यक्त किया।
